First Basketball game for over 2 years!
I took it easy all day today as I had my first basketball match in over 2 years this evening. The match went really well and we won by double the amount of points of the other team. I coped really well considering how out of shape I am and lasted 2 entire quarters which is pretty good considering.
I have a long way to go to be match fit and playing like I used to but I am happy at the way I started the season and have decided to focus on getting in Basketball shape instead of focussing really heavily on BMX at the moment.
I have decided that during the week I am going to do mostly Basketball related training apart from a couple of sprint sessions and then at the weekend I will be really BMX focussed and ride with my son for a couple of hours a day then focus on rest and recovery for the rest of the weekend.
My initial plan is as follows:
Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday | Saturday | Sunday | |
AM | Walking | Road Bike | Walking | Road Bike | Walking | BMX | BMX |
AM | Layup Drills | Shooting | REST | Shooting | Layup Drills | BMX | BMX |
PM | BMX Sprints / Manuals | Walking/ Conditioning | Match | Walking/ Conditioning | BMX Sprints / Manuals | Walking | Walking |
PM | Stretch | Stretch | Stretch | Stretch | Stretch | Stretch | Stretch |
As I wake up at 5:30 and start work at 8:30 at the moment I can get a walk/ road bike session in and also a basketball workout too. As I will be warm when I get to the court I can start with defensive slide drills and then do a layup workout or shooting workout and then walk home in time to work at 8:30.
I have also decided that I need to work on my stretching /flexibility to try and prevent injuries and also increase my range of motion (ROM) and help with my back issues so I am going to try and add 20-30 minutes of stretching to my routine before bed in the evenings as the last time I was doing this regularly my performance improved a lot due to the increased ROM!
On Mondays and Fridays I plan to do my usual 10000 step walk followed by an hour of layup drills and practice, I will then work until 5pm and then in the evening plan to do BMX sprints and then manual practice followed by 20-30 minutes of stretching and then bed.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays I plan on doing an hour on the road bike followed by an hour of shooting at the basketball court before work then getting my 10000 steps in after work and then doing my bodyweight conditioning program and then stretching.
On Wednesdays I will walk my 10000 Steps early in the morning and then rest until the Match in the evening and then when I get home do my stretching before bed.
Like I said earlier the BMX sessions at the weekends will be early morning but will be less structured to keep it fun for my son who is getting back into riding so I want to get him really interested in it again! Saturdays will be mostly riding pump tracks for a couple of hours focusing on improving jumping and manuals and Sundays will be more than likely at Bath track as I have to run gates on Sundays so we can train before gates and then if my Son wants to ride gates he can and if not that’s cool he can ride home as he has already trained for the day. I am hoping that once he learns to manual and jump he will be more likely to want to stay for gates as he will be less embarrassed about not having bike skills. I love gates sessions so will definitely want to do gates as well!
I am going to play it by ear next week and see how my body copes with this plan. If it is struggling I will cut out the sprints and conditioning until I get a bit fitter and slowly introduce them into the training week during September.
